I’m sorry, but articles looking for new medications for headaches always irritates me. First of all, most patients have multiple types of headaches (and while “migraine” seems to be the wastebasket diagnosis most are given, I find most are not migraine at all…) so they will need multiple therapeutic angles. Headache Prophylaxis
This article was a compilation of Medline abstracts put together by Mescape Neurology with a link to 18 articles with abstracts. 2 of these dealt with natural substances. One with glucosamine (not a well known use for this substance) and one with fever few (well known and effective for headaches).
Amitriptyline Effective Prophylaxis for Headache in Childhood
There are two interesting things in this article. First, headaches in children are becoming prevalent enough to warrant research studies on eliminating them. We must ask ourselves why children are now more likely to suffer from headaches. The second issue is the long term introduction and use of pharmaceutical drugs in children. Children, Gluten, Sleep Apnea and Headaches, Oh My!
Here’s the reality of human physiology; we will NEVER understand how complicated it is. Gluten sensitivity’s effect on the brain falls under this category.
There’s no doubt that many of us has a grasp on small amounts of how the body works, but the big picture is just too big for any one of us to understand fully. Treatment Of Chronic Migraine
Efficacy and Safety of Topiramate for the Treatment of Chronic Migraine
Talk about a difference in perception!!! The authors conclude that “Topiramate is safe and generally well tolerated in this group of subjects with chronic migraine, a burdensome condition with important unmet treatment needs. Safety and tolerability of topiramate were consistent with experience in previous clinical trials involving the drug.”
Look at the data and tell me is “generally” means 10% of the study population stopped due to side effects. And all of this for a whopping 1.5/91 days decrease in headache over placebo. So, we’re going to spend, what, say $600 for 3 months Topamax to have 1.5 days less HA? But let’s cut chiro Rx to save money.
